Tamecare recovery collars stop dogs and cats from licking, biting or scratching stitches, wounds and hot spots while they heal. Choose a soft Elizabethan cone for the widest coverage, or an inflatable donut collar for a more comfortable fit that lets your pet see, eat and sleep more easily. Every collar comes in sizes S, M and L.
Cone or inflatable collar: which one does my pet need?
| Collar type | Best for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Soft Elizabethan cone | Wounds on the face, paws, legs or tail; pets that are good at reaching around a collar | Wider, so your pet may need time to get used to doorways and food bowls |
| Inflatable donut collar | Wounds on the body, such as spay or neuter incisions; pets that will not settle in a cone | Does not cover the face, and long-necked or very flexible pets may still reach their paws or tail |
Your veterinarian knows where the wound is and how your pet moves, so ask which type they recommend. You can also see our inflatable collars on their own.
How to choose the right size
- Neck: measure around your pet's neck where their everyday collar sits.
- Length: for a cone, also measure from the base of the neck to the tip of the nose. The cone should reach just past the nose.
- Compare: check both numbers against the size chart in the product images. If your pet is between sizes, contact us before ordering.
A good fit lets you slide two fingers under the collar but stops your pet from pulling it over their head.
Recovery collar FAQ
Can my dog eat, drink and sleep with a recovery collar on?
Most pets can eat, drink and sleep in an inflatable collar. In a cone, raise the food and water bowls or use a shallow dish. If your pet struggles, remove the collar only at mealtimes and only while you are watching.
How long should my pet wear the collar?
Keep it on for as long as your veterinarian advises, which is usually until stitches are removed or the wound has fully closed.
Which collar is best after spay or neuter surgery?
Many pets are comfortable in an inflatable collar after a spay or neuter, because the incision is on the belly. If your pet can still reach the area, switch to a cone.
Do these collars fit cats?
Yes. Our inflatable recovery collars are designed for dogs and cats. Measure your cat's neck and choose the size that matches.
